Biographical Text
Sadie Likens was a police matron and charity worker. Born to Moses and Rhoda Morehouse, Likens moved throughout the central United States before settling in Colorado in 1881. There she was involved with the Women's Christian Temperance Union before taking a job as a police matron in 1888, where she looked after the needs of women inmates. However, the introduction of a Populist government led to her dismissal in 1895, after which she turned her attention to numerous other matron and social work endeavors. She also became more heavily involved in volunteer work with organizations such as the Colorado Cottage Home, the Florence Crittendon Home, the Denver Orphan's House, the Old Ladies’ Home, and the Young Women’s Friendly League.
Likens was married to David Isaiah Washburn until his death during the Civil War. The two had a son named Fred, who died young. Likens later married William Wallace Likens in 1869, with whom she had four children named Ada Belle, Reuel, Velma, and Clarence. However, their marriage dissolved in 1888, with William permanently departing the family home in Denver. Likens fell ill and passed away at a family home around age 80.
