Biographical Text
Ida Lewis was a lighthouse keeper and first woman to be awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for her numerous rescues. Born to lighthouse keeper Hosea and his wife Idawalley, Lewis grew up on Lime Rock Island in Newport, Rhode Island. After her father became disabled in 1857, Lewis became increasingly involved in maintaining the lighthouse, completing her first rescue at age 12. In 1879, she was appointed lighthouse keeper after the death of her mother, who had assumed the role following Hosea's death years prior. Throughout the course of her life Lewis saved at least 18 lives.
Lewis was briefly married to Captain William Wilson from 1870 until their separation in 1872. She passed of a stroke at age 69, just six years after her final rescue.
