Esther Joseph Pariseau, called Mother Joseph, was an architect best known for her missionary work in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. She became a sister in 1843, and was later chosen to lead a small group on a mission to Vancouver, Washington. There she founded Providence of the Holy Angels, which served as a convent, hospital, school, and orphanage. She oversaw the construction of buildings both for Providence of the Holy Angels and other mission sites across the western United States, namely hospitals, orphanages, and schools (including multiple Native American boarding schools). She died of a brain tumor at age 78 and was buried in a Vancouver, Washington cemetery named for her.
